    Another option would be to create a bootable USB from install media. Then you need console access to interrupt the boot cycle at the loader screen and do the format install from this prompt.     Although mine aren't SRX, but, NG-RE's in MX, I recently did the USB upgrade from 17.4R2-S10 to 22.2R3-S2.8 and it was fine. I saved the config before, and put it back in after.
